Eastern coyotes act like little wolves and are more 'pack oriented' than western coyotes. Oftentimes eastern coyotes hunt in packs. I've seen this with my own eyes. And when I call in a coyote here in NY, it is rarely ever alone...
A long time houndsman shared his theory on eastern coyotes with me after I returned his lost hound last winter.
He theorized that the eastern coyote surely has wolf in it's blood, if only for the color variations that are present here in the east.
He surmised that somewhere on their eastern migration, coyotes and wolves crossed, thereby introducing some wacky colors into the coyote genepool that are not present in most western coyotes...
coyotes out west rarely have the wide range of color variations that are present in eastern coyotes. I've seen coyotes that looked like creamsicles (orange/white), silver/white, rusty red/brown, dark gray/black, and "regular" colored coyotes. This color variation is a trait that is quite common amongst wolves...
This was the opinion of a man who has hunted coyotes with hounds for almost 30years, so I'm just passing this info along....
