Winter will be making a bold return to Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin Tuesday and Wednesday, as a storm drops up to a foot of snow in parts of the region.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the Twin Cities, most of southeastern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. A blizzard watch has been issued for parts of southeastern Minnesota including the Rochester and Albert Lea areas.
WCCO-TV meteorologist Chris Shaffer said the snow will start falling in southwestern Minnesota Tuesday morning. The steady snow is expected to be in the Twin Cities by lunchtime and snow could still be falling for the afternoon rush hour Tuesday.
Heavier snow is possible Tuesday evening and overnight into Wednesday. Snow could fall at a rate of up to an inch per hour in some areas southeast of the Twin Cities, Shaffer said.
Winds will also be a problem overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday. Wind gusts of up to 40 mph will create near-whiteout conditions in southern Minnesota. Winds will also be strong in the Twin Cities, causing blowing and drifting of whatever snow does fall.
The snow will taper off throughout Wednesday morning, Shaffer said. The Twin Cities could get 2 to 4 inches of accumulation, with 3 to 6 inches in southeastern Minnesota and up to a foot in Iowa and southern Wisconsin.
Once it's done snowing, it gets cold again. Highs Thursday and Friday will likely not make it to the double digits and the low Friday night could dip below zero.
